Saskatchewan Black Legal Clinic: In-reach to Melfort SK and Surrounding Area
To create awareness about Saskatchewan Black Legal Clinic offered under the auspices of our organization’s Access to Justice Program, TAYFFI team facilitated two in-person legal information sessions for Black individuals and families residing in Melfort and surrounding area in the month of April 2026.
The outreach engagements were coordinated in conjunction with NorthEast Outreach Support Services and it brought together several participants from NEOSS and Prince Albert Multicultural Council.
Through both visits, new partnerships were formed with Legal Practitioners in Melfort including other intersectoral organizations such as Legal Aid Saskatchewan, Ministry of Youth and Adult probations, and the Ministry of Social Services, Melfort Service Center.
Participants gained knowledge on different services available through TAYFFI’s Access to Justice Program such as:
- support for individuals actively navigating the court system;
- connection to relevant community legal resources
- access to cultural brokerage and family dialogue through the Black Legal Clinic;
- accompaniment to court and lawyers offices;
- interpretation and translation support services, and
- other services and programs offered at TAYFFI.
Beyond learning, the session served as a space to build connections within the community. Participants and organizations in attendance had the opportunity to share resources, strengthen relationships, and explore opportunities for collaborations.
The CEO of FLK Law Firm and former President of the Law Society of Saskatchewan, Dr. Foluke Laosebikan, described the Access to Justice program as “very necessary” and commended Truly Alive Youth and Family Foundation Inc for leading this most needed initiative in Saskatchewan.
We at TAYFFI express sincere appreciation to NEOSS and PAMC for their invitation, support and collaborations; we extend our gratitude to FLK Law Firm for their hospitality and support; above all, we remain grateful to individuals and community members who made the Melfort in-reach successful.
