Advancing Black Awakening on the Hill

Did you know? Since 2015, the Federal Government of Canada has distributed over $760 million into programs uplifting Black communities nationwide!

And guess what? This commitment continues in the2024 federal budget, with significant measures like the Impact of Race and Culture Assessment (IRCAs) receiving $2 million yearly allocation until fiscal year 2028 – 2029 (ref. Pg 262 of 2024 Federal Budget)

But wait, there’s more! Specific to supporting Black communities, additional measures are captured in the 2024 Federal Budget as follows:

  • $62.9 million over three years, starting in 2024-25, to renew and expand the Local Food Infrastructure Fund to support community organizations across Canada to invest in local food infrastructure, with priority to be given to Indigenous and Black communities, along with other equity-deserving groups. (Ref. Pg 141 of Budget 2024)
  • $4 million over two years, starting in 2024-25, for the Public Health Agency of Canada to continue supporting initiatives through the Mental Health of Black Canadians Fund that aim to increase health equity and address mental health and its determinants for Black Canadians. (Ref. Pg 234 of Budget 2024)

Beyond the budgetary allocation to supporting Black communities, Truly Alive Youth and Family Foundation Inc under the auspices of Saskatchewan Coalition of Black Canadians continues to engage with government in terms of policy work being put into addressing racism and systemic discrimination that led to the overrepresentation of Black people in the criminal justice system, including as victims of crime with the ultimate, actionable goal of reforming and modernizing the criminal justice in Canada – ensuring equal protection and equal treatment for Black people under Canadian Law.
