How Sankofa Is Supporting Career Success in Saskatchewan

For Withney Robertson-Williams, preparing for employment in Canada has meant more than developing job-search skills. Through the Sankofa Economic Empowerment & Workforce Initiative, she is gaining a fresh perspective on her strengths and the career she hopes to build.

“The Sankofa Program has been more than just a training experience for me. It has been a journey of self-discovery, personal growth, and professional development… I will carry the lessons, confidence, and connections I have gained through this program with me as I continue my journey in Canada.”

Withney’s experience reflects the purpose of the initiative, delivered by Truly Alive Youth and Family Foundation Inc. (TAYFFI) to help job seekers from Saskatchewan’s Black communities develop the skills and connections needed to navigate the Canadian labour market.

Building Skills and Creating Opportunities

Launched in September 2026, the first cohort is progressing through an eight-week Employment Readiness Program combining in-person and virtual learning. Participants receive practical training in résumé and cover-letter development, LinkedIn and professional branding, job searching, interview preparation, digital skills, Canadian workplace culture, employment standards and career planning.

Beyond structured training, participants receive individualized career coaching tailored to their qualifications, experience and employment goals. This includes support with job applications, identifying suitable vacancies, practising interviews and connecting with potential employers.

As the program progresses, participants are gaining confidence in presenting their skills, communicating their professional experience and making informed career decisions. Relationships with employers are also being strengthened to expand opportunities for job referrals, interviews and employment.

Recognizing that participants often balance career development with work, family and other responsibilities, the program offers flexible learning options and personalized support beyond scheduled sessions. This approach makes training more accessible and helps participants pursue their career goals while managing other commitments.

What’s Next for Sankofa?

As Cohort 1 approaches completion, efforts are focused on strengthening employer engagement, expanding career coaching and preparing for upcoming cohorts.

Plans are also underway to introduce the Absorb Learning Management System, featuring a self-paced Employment Readiness curriculum. This will allow participants who cannot always attend live sessions to access learning resources and develop their skills at their own pace.

The initiative continues to support participants in applying their qualifications and experience toward meaningful employment while building stronger connections with Saskatchewan employers.

We sincerely thank the Government of Canada for funding the Sankofa Economic Empowerment & Workforce Initiative. This support is helping make practical employment training, personalized career guidance and employer connections more accessible to job seekers from Saskatchewan’s Black communities.

The next Sankofa Employment Readiness cohort begins November 10, 2026.
