Emancipation Day Declaration – Being Black in Canada!

Being Black in Canada comes with unpleasant reality of dark history of slavery and its persisting consequences in Canada, the injustices forced upon people of African descent, and their resilience and perseverance in overcoming adversity throughout Canada’s history until the present day.

Truly Alive Youth and Family Foundation Inc (TAYFFI) is a Black-led registered charity that offers tailored support and array of empowerment programs for members of ethnic/visible minority groups in Saskatoon particularly Black communities.

In alignment with its mandate and Maya Angelou’s famous quote that “only equals can become friends,” Truly Alive Youth and Family Foundation Inc (TAYFFI) advocates for inclusive participation, active social engagement, and equitable economic outcomes for Saskatoon Black communities. Our organization serves as a conduit for mobilization of knowledge and growing engagement among key stakeholders and leaders across Saskatoon diverse Black communities called Saskatoon Black Canadian Alliance Network (SBCAN). The scope and objectives of Saskatoon Black Canadian Alliance Network include identifying ongoing/emerging socioeconomic and general well-being issues affecting Black individuals and families, and suggesting community-impact approaches to addressing identified concerns and systemic barriers.

Our organization joins Black Canadians, especially people of African Descent from coast to coast to coast on the official designation of August 1 of each year as Emancipation Day, marking the day in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect across the British Empire.

Truly Alive Youth and Family Foundation Inc (TAYFFI) affirms its commitment to lifting the voices of visible/ethnic minorities in Saskatoon, advocating for intentional support for Black communities, and dismantling racism in all its forms!
