Canada’s Black Justice Strategy Report

Canada’s Black Justice Strategy Report

Access to Justice is Vital to providing the Justice to which every person is entitled” Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of the SCC. 2015. Canadian Bar Association.

We are thrilled to share with you the news of the Department of Justice release of the report of TAYFFI’s recent work alongside 11 other Black-led organizations nationally on the historic Canada’s Black Justice Strategy!

On Tuesday June 25, 2024, we hosted The Honourable Minister Arif Virani, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada for an in-person roundtable discussion with the leadership of Truly Alive Youth and Family Foundation Inc (TAYFFI) and representatives of Saskatchewan Coalition of Black Canadians – a hub supporting Black communities in Saskatchewan for which TAYFFI is the convener.

Our Saskatchewan Black Communities Consultation report will contribute to the development of Canada’s first-ever Black Justice Strategy with the goal to address anti-Black racism and other inter-linked discriminations that contribute to the overrepresentation of Black people in Canada’s Justice System – a call to action and transformative change to ensure equal treatment and equal protection for Black people under the law in Canada.

We at TAYFFI are grateful to Black community members, system partners, and representatives of intersectionality organizations including Black inmates at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary who participated in our consultation engagement last summer and fall.

We are thrilled to have brought the voices, views,  and perspectives of Saskatchewan Black communities forward, thereby bringing our realities and lived experiences to the front burner the front burner on national table, and being counted among those writing Canada’s history as it relates to Black Access to Justice.
